Ready for Isaac's Rain

There is supposed to be a big chance of rain so I cultivated our little garden. You can see the scratching plow on the cub. It sure looks better and maybe the rain will soak down into the ground to the roots of my plants.

Sissy

Got a call today from the fellow that owns this NKC registered Feist. Isn't she pretty. He wondered about breeding her to my male Feists. What the owner of a Feist needs to do is take the dog back to the Kennel she came from and breed to one in the same line. Think of the gene pool like a pool. In the same line the pool is smaller, so you will more likely get the genes you want in the offspring. Say the gene pool, is the size of a nice big bucket. Now, if you breed too close--we say father to daughter or mother to son--the gene pool gets really small. Just imagine it looking like a tea cup and yes you may get the genes you want but you have a greater chance of getting genes you don't want such as serious health issues. Now, if you two dogs that are not related in 3 or 4 generations, think of your gene pool like a small pond. You may get genes you want but your odds are not as good. Breeding Feists that have many of the same ancestors on both sides of the pedigree is what we call line breeding. The best line breeding we feel goes across two lines and brings both back to the offspring!

Happy hunting!

New Chickens for Miss Betty

Can't recall if I posted this or not...but I bought Miss Betty some new chickens. They are Welsummer Bantams. This breed originated in Holland. They are a pretty dark color a just a little bigger and thicker than our other Bantams.
The two eggs on the right are from our new hens. The white egg is from our other Bantams and the dark egg is from the Golden Comet. The Welsummer eggs are a nice size. We have let the chickens out the last two days. Today we got 8 eggs where we had been getting 3 eggs. I think they are saying 'thank you'.

These are the two pups out of Spud and Bell (Larry Ellingson's Feist). We are offering them to homes. Roxy (female) is black, tan and white. Rooster is red with white accents and a black mask. The best thing about these two pups is their outgoing sweet personality. Like all our pups they are $350.00 and ready now. Larry Ellingson's Bell is out of our old Max. Spud's sire is Max so these pups are double grandpa'ed by Max.

Treed All Day

Look closely and you can see Dobs behind Spud treed from the big pen I have. You can't see Cora but she is on the tree on the outside of the pen. From 10:00 in the morning until 7:00 p.m. they kept the squirrel treed up this big Gum tree. Finally I went back and shot it to Cora. I thought since she was not coming home I would need to shoot it to her. She is going to make a fine dog. Can't wait for the season since Betty can ride shot gun this year.

Brush Pile Burned

Got rid of one big brush pile today. Had to do a little water work around the edge to keep it contained but it all went well. No snakes crawled out either.

Every farm needs a place to pile brush and a hole dug to get rid of unwanted stuff. I have both here. I almost have the hole full and will soon cover it over. Someday some archaeologist will dig it up and wonder what kind of grave it was!

Fall Garden

The Lord has blessed us with a couple of little showers and our fall garden is coming up. We had to put the stuff around it to keep the deer out. Sure hope it works. We got it at the Co-op! Our friend in Russellville said it worked like a charm. We will let you know and if anyone wants to know what it is...I will look on the sack and let you know. It is about $15.00 a bag and a bag will go around the garden.

Noise Conditioning

Our three O pups are 9 weeks old today. Pups need to hear all types of noise and not be afraid. I was working on one of my Cub tractors and started it up while they were eating their supper. Notice they look up startled but don't run away and hide.
By the time the pups are 12 weeks old, they need to hear gun noise. I usually start with a 22. They need to think gun is fun, not gun, I'll run! These 3 pups are for sale, $350.00 until we give the second shot then the price will go up. They are out of Opal and Oliver--both good Feist Squirrel dogs. All three are females, Obie, Ocie and Odie!

Sugar

A few days ago I posted a picture of Anna (Phillip Scroggins) in Texas Feist. She was high in a tree going after her squirrel. Rodney Bowen sent a photo today of her full sister littermate, Sugar. (We called her Rhoda.) Well, she is flying too! Sugar is bred to Spud and Rodney says she is plumping out so he is sure she is going to have pups.

How high will Sugar go...as high as she can get to get the squirrel

Celebrating O Pups--For Sale!

We still have O pups available. We have been slack at letting folks see them. Betty has blood clots and we have been going to the Dr. but we have them on the Galla Web site now. I thought I would give some pup raising tips! Here goes!
Worm the mother and get her off the ground when you know she is going to have pups.

The whelping kennel needs to be clean, clean, clean.

When pups are born, if you want docked tails do it by day three.

Worm 3 week old pups with a good wormer.

Continue worming schedule about 10 day intervals.

Give mother all she wants to eat.

Pour out water daily and clean water dish.

If hot, change water 2 times a day.

New mothers need a big water bucket!

Wean Feist pups at about 6 weeks.

Don't let the mother stay with them! That is not weaning.

Worm them when you move the mother.

Do not let the pups on dirt or soil until they have a puppy shot.

Feed pups only a good dry food.

Feed 2 to 3 times a day. About 1/4 c. per pup.

What food they don't eat, take out of whelping pen.

Make sure they can reach the water dish.

Don't allow urine in pup bed.

Clean it with bleach water if they pee there! They will stop.

After the 1st shot, start socializing the pups.

Try to feed them away from their kennel to help with cleanliness.

You must medicate if a pup has loose bowel.

Watch for slime in stool. This is serious. Stool should be firm.

Do not put ANY liquid on the pups' food.

They need dry food to clean their teeth and water brings bacteria.

If you want to avoid a vet bill, add plain yogurt to food of pups with slimy stool.

6 week old pup with diarrhea for more than one day, could die!

Well, here are the O girls! For sale--both parents great squirrel dogs. Price $350.00. Ocie is the smallest and she has a rose ear. She was the runt! No one told her as she is very out going. Obie has two little spots by her tail and Odie has a dot on her forehead. They are wonderful Feist pups. Just the age to go to the woods this fall. 479 890 8090

What A Feist

Anna will climb anywhere to get her man---uh, I mean squirrel. Phillip Scoggins has been letting her run out all day in East Texas and Anna has gone insane over squirrels. Anna and Sugar go back to our Romeo, Bell, Rowdy, Ole Max, Ozarks Chief, Allar's Fred, Otis, Lady--and many, many more great squirrel dogs! These pups brother is Dan--the blue tick looking Feist we bred Lia to last time--for those of you that have one of those pups including Nell and Spook that Danny Hooker owns! Thanks Phillip for sharing with us!
Look closely---you will see Anna high in the tree at Phillips Scroggins house in East Texas. Anna is a full sister, same litter to the little Feist in the photo below. Rodney Bowen owns Sugar (we called her Rhoda). Sugar is bred to Spud. Pups are due in a little over a month. If you want a flying squirrel dog....this is your chance.

Tennessee Cat Squirrel

I think Sevierville, Tennessee is pretty close to Wayne Hawkins In Georgia! Wayne this is Little Pigeon Creek and one of your squirrels.

Betty's sister sent this picture of a Gray Squirrel. She is on vacation near Sevierville, Tennessee, and thought we would like to see a squirrel from there. This one was near Little Pigeon Creek. Picture of the Creek, too. Thanks, Fleta.

Birdie Is Back

Birdie Sue is here visiting. She is going to be bred to Tie. Birdie is out of Spud and Lacy J. (Larry Ellingson's Feist). Lacy goes back to Bell and Rowdy and you can see that Birdie looks a lot like our old Bell. We called Birdie Sookie! But W. T. Vickory changed her name to Birdie Sue. He named her after his two sisters Birdie is pictured below with W. T.'s grandsons when he picked her up here in 2011.

Ellingson's Bell ~ Spud Pups

Here are the 4 pups from Larry Ellingson's Bell and our Spud. I get a male and a female. Ole Max is their grandfather on both sides. I like those red spotted ones. They are 6 weeks old but we can't go get our until next week some time.
