Chili Weather is Around the Corner

These 4 bucks are grazing in Carroll County, Arkansas. I own a few acres near where this was taken. It is part of Betty's home place. I think all 4 of the grazers are bucks.

For the Love of My Galla Mountain Feist

Tony sent pictures of Dan and his new pen. Dan has to stay in this crate in the house while Tony is at work. He fixed this pen so Dan would have a little space during the day. Dan does not even go to the bathroom in his new pen as he is so proud of his day care--day time kennel. Here is Tony's email:
Larry and Betty I bought Dan an outside pen so he does not have to stay in the crate while I am not at home. Skeeters are bad here so he does sleep in his crate inside the house at night. He has been staying in it for over a week, and so far has not even relieved himself inside the pen. It's not sitting on a concrete pad. I did not want the trouble or expense of laying one so I got the idea of using concrete backing boards. The sheets are the type you use to hang tile on. Brand name is Hardiebacker bought at Home Depot. The boards are strong enough to walk on eventhough the ground is not perfectly flat, and are supposed to be water and mildew resistant. It took four 5'x3'x1/2" sheets to cover the bottom of a 10'x5' pen. Dan loves to dig so something in the bottom of the pen was a must. So far after several rains I have not seen anything that makes me think they will not hold up, but the jury is still out on that. I have my fingers crossed they will.
I have noticed since I have been letting him stay in the pen he is more observant of birds and squirrels than before. He notices them and chases them whereas before it was like he could not pick them out. Im not sure if being outside during the day and seeing them from his pen has made him more aware of them or not. He chased a squirrel today and got up on the tree but did not bark at all until I said talk to me Dan. I think he is doing pretty good so far. He uses his nose and it's always to ground if he is moving.

She is registered NKC and priced at $400.00!

Zach Taylor--Galla Mountain Feist

Jeremy Yates sent these photos of Zach Taylor (out of Opal and Tie). They should make everyone want a Mountain Feist squirrel dog from Galla Creek. Zach is a looker. I think the pictures of Zach checking the trees is a game I told Jeremy to play with Zach. You hide little pieces of hot dog on nails in trees about a foot or so off the ground. You can even just stick them on the tree without a nail. Then let your Feist out and he will start sniffing the trees for what you have hid. It is a good way to bond with your dog and to get him interested in the scents on the trees.

Thanks for Sharing, Jeremy!

Mountain Feist Squirrel Dogs Treeing On a Zip Line

Came home this evening to find my Galla Creek Mountain Feist squirrel dogs treed!
Only thing is they were tied to a zip line. I wasn't going to shoot the squirrel but little Cora Vette joined in with a yodel bark so I shot it for her. Tie got to it first and did a little crushing, but Cora got to hold it high in the air and prance around the yard as if to say 'hey, look at me, I got the prize!'

I have several pups from Tie and Patch that were born August 15. I had not preadvertised them, but I sold the first male tonight. They should be great squirrel dogs. They go back to Spook twice, Shooter twice, Peanut, and Max, talk about stacked up squirrel hunting genes, they should have them!

Zip Line

I have Tie, C. C. Rider, and Lia all on Zip Lines. The dogs like this so much better than a pen. I am going to get one ready for Spud so he can be zipped out too. The Feists are not nearly as bored with this set-up. They can see and actually can move around a lot more. They do not dig like in pen. I bought a Zip Line at Tractor Supply and then discovered they were less than $20 at Wal-Mart if I remember right. I also found them at Amazon on the computer and they were even less than Walmart. You can mow the area the dogs run and also they tend to keep the deer out of our yard better than being in a pen. I don't have much love for deer and will do all I can to keep them away from my garden.

Betty is working on our Galla Feists Web Site, but she had to start back to school today so it will be a while before she gets much more done. Bear with us as we plan to have a great Galla Feist site again. I hope you will bookmark the site and check back in to see how it is progressing.
If you are typing in the URL you will have to remember that we put an s on the end of Feists.
Here is a link Galla Feist dot Com!
I got this nice email from Tony Marshall about Galla Creek Dan. Dan is out of Lia and Dan and he is only 3 months old!
Here is Tony's email:
Betty and Larry I could not stand it and trapped another squirrel today. I know Dan is not quite three months old, but decided to let him mess with another trapped squirrel. Dan was really fired up. He was barking and growling and biting at the squirrel he even grabbed some hair on it's tail sticking out of the trap. I put it up on a tree and he continued to bark, although as much as when it was on the ground. I opened the trap on the ground and when the squirrel exited Dan was right behind him chasing him up another tree about 15 yards away.

It was funny because he would stand on tree and bark then back off and try to run up the tree and fall down. He did this several times, but when he figured out he could not get the squirrel he stopped barking. I got him to stand at the base and bark a little more by saying talk to me. I did not want to push it so I just kept praising him and then let him get back to being a pup. He was really wound up afterward running around like crazy.
Note from Galla Creek--Do all you can to keep the dog from trying to run and jump at the tree. It is a bad habit. You can see than Dan only did it a while, but if there is a lot of running the tree, just stop and try this again another time. Running the tree is usually caused by having the squirrel so low that the Feist thinks he might be able to grab the squirrel. You can imagine in the woods if your dog runs up the base of the tree. He might fall back on other dogs and a fight could be on. Also, his concentration is on running and not viewing the squirrel. Just my thought and I don't know everything!
This was the third trapped squirrel he has seen since I brought him home. Each time he is more aggressive towards the squirrel and with his barking. I plan on doing it again, but will wait at least a few weeks. Next time I would like to shoot the squirrel out for him after he has treed it. At what age do you start shooting a gun around them? I figure it's best for him to be broke on a gun before shooting a squirrel out for him. If not he might take off with his tail between his legs.

Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong as your advise is always welcomed. Hope y'all are well.

Note from Galla Creek--sounds like Tony has Dan coming on strong. He may actually be treeing wild squirrels before the season is over. Keep up the work Tony!

Always Something!!

I think of Centurytel just about like this Hawk on the top of my Martin house. They lost my entire Galla Feist site! Sorry Suckers!

You may have noticed. My Galla Creek Feist Kennel Web Site is dead. It died in July 2011. I was paying $10.00 for the site for almost 20 years. Betty had spent 1000s of hours hand writing that site. I must say it full of all sorts of good stuff. It is all gone. Betty saved a skeleton of the old site. She cried for a few days, but now is determined to pick up and start again.

Our new web page will be at this site
Notice there is an s on Feists. There is not much there yet. But maybe if we live 20 more years we can have good web site again. She has the entry page and the pups for sale page and stud dog page up. She says she may do dogs for sale tomorrow.

Check us out. We love all of our Blog viewers. At least here we have about 5,000 photos stored!

Jag

The Hilliards at Harrison sent some photos of Jag. We were glad to hear he had gotten out of the chew up and destory mode. They are excited about hunting in the fall...just as I am.

Here is the email:
Hey you all,
Just an update on Jag. He stopped chewing on everything in sight .Thank goodness. Laine and I introduced him to some frogs that we got gigging recently. They made a fine dinner the next night. He didn't know what to think. As you can tell, he's been a little lazy on hot summer days. That's how he naps sometimes in his box on the back porch. But something has really got his dander up lately. A squirrel tries to tease him on a daily basis in the back yard and Jag will have none of it. He trees him all the time and barks a lot more than last year. He's even doing a little cold treeing. Jag will be a year old soon and Laine and I can't wait to start running him again.

Spook

I did try to breed Spook to Tie but it does not look like it took. I have a female expecting a litter August 16. The female is one I call Patch and she is out Bonnie and Shooter. I bred her to Tie so it is a line breeding toward the Shooter way. Let me know if anyone wants a pup. I have not taken deposits on this bunch so all the slots are open. You can call me at

Zeke/Sig Pups

The Siggy / Zeke litter of pups that belong to Clif and Regina Phillips have really grown up. My favorite is the one who looks like Opal. Clif was using a dead squirrel here to get them to back. They finally grabbed it and the rest is history. I am coping Regina's email about the pups here. They named them after the Texas Rangers baseball team.
Hi there...I sent a small note with pictures but my program will only let
me use so many words. The pictures of Zeke and the pups with Siggies prize
were not very clear because the little boogers and Zeke were running so
fast! They sure were excited over that squirrel! He runs all over the place usually and
won't stop at a tree for long even when he thinks there is a squirrel in
it.So Clif thought it would be good to work with him.Needless to say he
stayed on the tree and barked. The pup that had the squirrel the most in
the pictures is Cruz.He has turned out to be an odd colored one, blonde
with fawn colors I guess is what you would call it.He is the only one Clif
wanted to part with but I told him I thought he was going to be the best
one.Just like Siggie!LOL!We sure love all of our Galla creek feists!Hope
you are surviving the heat ok.I was worried about Siggie out in the heat
today but she wouldn't give up!

Dutch Reagan

Ronnie Abels sent pictures of his dog and kid family. The pup is Dutch out of Tie and Opal. The Brindle dog, Tigger, Ronnie got from my cousin, Rick. Tigger is a great squirrel dog. The third dog is Goldie and I think Ronnie said she was a Kemmer Cur. Ronnie and his wife are teachers. We want to say a big thank you for the new pictures!

Here is Ronnie's email:
Mr. Larry and Mrs. Betty,
Just an update to let ya'll know that Dutch is fitting in real well with the Abels family. Karlee loves him dearly. It seems that he is indoors more than out... Here are a few pictures that we took of Dutch and Tigger (AKA tiger) and our other puppy Goldie (3 months old). Sean can't wait for season to open so we can put them in the woods! Hope all is well at Galla Creek.
Thanks for Dutchy boy....Ronnie and family

Hot

It was 114 here today. It is too hot for me to even talk about it! Extreme discomfort for me but worse for my poor dogs. I carry them water two or three times a day. The water I pour out is too hot for them to drink.

Bandit Already Treeing

My little pup out of Lia and Ole Dan is treed in this video....but she is only barking at the scent on my shirt, but still this seems like a sign that she will bark treed on a squirrel scent one day!
