Treeing On A Zip Line

We were taking a stroll to Galla Lake and Tie was treeing from a distance.  The tree was way off near the Lake but he could see the squirrel frolicking in the tree. Sigrid thought she saw TWO squirrels so no wonder Tie was barking!  I like zip lines for grown dogs.  They get more exercise than in a kennel or pen.

Cora and Viper are about the same age.  I think they are both going to 'hot dogs' this fall.

Galla Creek Pearl

Pearl and Cora running free and Pearl on the zipline!

Our girl, Pearl, is on a zip line.  We wanted to let her run loose and put Sarge on the line some, but Sarge is keeping the deer out of Betty's garden so he has secured his free running.  We are letting Pearl run loose some in the day time along with Sarge and Cora.  She carries her grandmother, Opal's genes you can tell as they really look similar. Pearl has better confirmation and a better head that her Grandmother and I am just hoping she can tree like Grandma this fall!

This is Hagan and Maggie--two Galla Creek pups owned by the Malone family, Stewart and Angela.  We got a new email about these two this week.   Hagan treed his first squirrel and Maggie (Maggie is one of our O pups, we called her Opie) is on her way.  Maggie is now 3 months old and the picture here is when she was just 6 weeks.  Wonder what she looks like now.   We asked the Malones to please share a picture, but are just thrilled that they love both dogs!  Here is the email!

Dear Galla Creek:  Just wanted to let you know we could not be happier with both our pups. Hagen treed  for the first time today.  He has been tracking scents for sometime but never will bark on tree. Today we had been working in the yard on scent training and decided to take a break and check on some deer feeders. Hagen treed on the way back to truck. Of coarse I did not have a gun but I praised and praised.

Came back to brag and let Maggie out to play. Maggie started tracking the scent dummy we had been using earlier with Hagen. She worked it real slow but she stayed with it and she did find the correct tree. Guess we are going to start paying a little more attention to her training too.

Lulu Remembered And Loved

This is Lulu, a Feist loved by her family in New York.  Her lifespan was only four short years but she will be loved and remembered by the Whitlow family forever!

Get Out Front

If you want to hunt from a 4 wheeler or from your pick up truck, you must teach your dogs to run out in front of the vehicle. Here I am running Pearl in from of the Mule. She picked it right up. There is no way to hunt with a dog trailing you, you want them 'out front'.

Buster--One Special Feist!

Nothing makes us happier that helping place a dog in a family that literally love our Feist like family. That is what the Zack Kraft family did with Buster. Buster is out of Bonnie Sue Parker and O' Tie that Binds! He is a littermate to our Cora and she is one special dog too. This litter is almost so smart you can talk to them just like humans and they respond better than most people we know. Here is an email from Zack telling a little story about Buster. Then he shared 2 videos. In the first he asks Buster if he wants to go hunting. You will see Buster head for the truck, he understood exactly what Zack was saying. The last video is of Buster in the big woods at the end of last season. I am sure he will be even better this year! Thanks for sharing and thanks, Zack for loving our Feist!

Results

This top implement was covered with thick yellow paint and the bottom was covered with rust. They look lots better after a night in the rust vat. After another night soaking I figure they will look even better!

Making My Own Rust Eating Machine!

I love old tractors and often rust is encrusted on parts of them. I had heard of these rust removing machines and decided to build one myself. I have my first batch of parts in it cleaning. Can't wait to see how well it works...but rust is already rising to the top of the water in a scum form so I have high hopes. I show off the parts another day if this works well!

Pearl

Pearl is out of Sadie and Tie. She is a line bred female. Sadie is out of Opal and Spud and Tie is out of Dobs and Shooter! We think the females of the lines are of great importance. Since you can not see the gene pool of a dog, we are not geneticist, to know if the Feist carries the genes to tree a squirrel we must wait until the dog is proven to breed the Feist. That is how you get great pups. Breeding unproven dogs is just a crap shoot and we are not gamblers. We only bred dogs who tree squirrels and have abilities we want to pass to our pups! That is what any responsible breeder should do!

When Pearl is proven, we hope to bred her to Sarge if he proves himself!

Rooster Crowing In Eureka Springs

The Hughes family came today and took Rooster home to Eureka Springs. Trenton Hughes is holding him above. Below you can see why I always have to take more than one photo. I am just not too professional.

Rooster is to replace the hole in the Hughes families' heart because they lost their Feist, Rascal. We hope Rooster will be everything the Hughes want him to be and they will love him as they loved Rascal. He will be different but we know he if full of love of people and if he gets a chance they will be special to all of them.

Hope they will send pictures and let us see how Rooster changes as he grows.

Using A Check Cord

If you don't take time to bond with your Feist, when you decide to start working with them, they may not want to come to you. This is when I use a check cord. I make mine out of a good snap and heavy weed eater cord. Let your dog out of pen, put the check cord on their collar and start working with them getting them to come. If they don't come to you voluntarily, pull them to you using the check cord, then praise, praise, praise! I have left Sarge in the pen for too long with little interaction with me. Today, I put his friend Pearl on a zip line. (She is out of Sadie X Tie. Siggie was calling her Layla, but I am going to name her Pearl as it goes with Opal and she looks a lot like Opal who is her Grandmother). I am going to let Sarge run free for 10 days then switch and let Pearl be unpenned for 10 days.

It did not take me long to see I could take the check cord off Sarge. He continued to come to me on command. I am also working with him speaking on command. He did it once today. I cut up one hot dog and when he would come I gave him one piece. Out of the hot dog I probably had 20 little pieces. He is coming to me and is loving running free.

Most of the problems that develop with dogs are our own mistakes. Most of these can be corrected with loving care.

Galla Creek Zeppelin AKA Sarge is smart and really nice looking. I am looking forward to training Pearl and Sarge this season. Neither will be for sale as they will be replacements for the Kennel.

Hot and Humid

Isaac brought us a small rain, but I think maybe Ishmael was trailing him and brought misery. It is so hot and humid you can't breathe!

Year Ago

Not many squirrels have the guts to venture into Galla Meadow. I was looking at the pictures from last August and remember the day that a squirrel tried to get to the persimmon tree. Dogs treed on the zip line!

Rodney Bowen's Sugar with Pups

Sugar had 4 pups--2 girls and 2 boys. Spud is the sire and that black pup may look like him. They are all beautiful. We get one of them and are excited to have a Sugar Sweet Spud Pup!
