David Marshall's Dan

Dan is out of Lia and Ole Dan. He was born in May and David Marshall owns him. He got a squirrel here! Thanks David for sharing and telling us about Dan. Glad he is still progressing.
Here is David's email:
Larry and Betty, it's been awhile since I emailed y'all. Dan is doing fine and I took him out squirrel hunting the other afternoon. It had been since Sept. since he had been in the woods so he was just running and playing more than anything else. He is still just a pup so really I don't expect a lot. He also does not want to get out of sight of me. It makes it hard to still hunt with a pup running back and forth. It was windy too so it was tough to find any squirrels. Not long before dark the wind died down and he was getting tired. I had heard a squirrel barking so I kept easing in that direction. Dan was a few yards in front of me and I saw him start looking up in the tree he was under. Sure enough I saw a grey squirrel running to the top of the tree. I shot him out and Dan pounced on him, but the squirrel was dead on arrival. Dan shook it and threw it in the air a few times growling. I got the squirrel from him and hung it in a tree. He barked then of course really strong. I gave him lots of praise and cut the squirrel open so he could have the insides. We got one other fox squirrel before we made it back to the truck. It was about the same as the first on how he reacted. It was a real big male fox squirrel I shoot a .22 and shot it in the hind leg on purpose but the angle must have hit some vitals too. It to was about expired when it hit the ground. He is starting to clamp down on them instead of nipping and backing off. The photos are just of him and the grey. sorry they are not very good photos.

Take care,
Tony Marshall

Another Deer Boast!

Matt Howell's Dad, Lannie, is shown here with the 9 point buck he killed at the beginning of this season. I am sure it was near Lannie's farm at Heber Springs. Matt prepared the deer trophy for his Dad and you can see he did a great job. Pictured with Lannie is his Grandson.

Thanks for sharing, Matt.

Parker Crosses the Rainbow Bridge

October 16, 1999 to November 23, 2011
Remembrance of A Greatly loved Feist--Parker!

We received an email yesterday from the sad family of Parker. Of course, we immediately thought of our own Parker (brother to Carrie nation)....but this was not Galla Creek Parker, but another who carried the same name. We wanted to post a memory to Parker. Below are the two emails from the Lange family!
Dear Larry,
Wanted to let you know that Parker has crossed the rainbow bridge 11-23-11. He was very brave and underwent a very serious surgery, but the postop complications afterward came for him. I know how schmaltzy that sounds considering the nature of mountain feists. I know he’ll be chasing down, off-leash, all the squirrels he can find now. Parker didn’t hunt, per se, but I have great memories of his natural treeing antics in the yard, and those fuzzy tails just teasing him. Thanks for your friendship. I look forward to checking out your page and blog regularly for the beautiful dogs and woods in Galla Creek. Perhaps, in time, we’ll be ready for another little feist, but right now there’s a big silence in the house.
Follow up email explaining about Parker's pedigree!
Hi Larry – Your reply means the world to us. We’re not sure of Parker’s genealogy. He was purchased from a shop at Fairfield Mall in Fairborn, unregistered, and probably nobody would fess up to sending him off that way anymore. We were told his breeder’s name was Steve(?), who perhaps lived at one time in or near Springfield, OH. They gave us pictures of his parents – maybe you recognize them or know someone who might? We’d sure tell Steve, if that was his name, how much we loved that dog. Anyway, when I first went looking for other pups like him, yours were the first I saw but that’s not saying he was. Since then, I’ve seen a lot more squirrel dogs, but then I never realized what great working dogs these feists were – never heard of them before, hehehe. I’ve enclosed some pics...His puppy pic is old and pretty grainy, but Parker’s the lead pup in the pic w/his mother. You can get a pretty good look at Parker’s Dad all stretched up on (Steve?)’s lap. Obviously, Parker had some sibs – heaven knows if they worked at eliminating squirrels or were just sweet companions – broken homes are a puppy’s lot sometimes. Anyway, you’ve got to know what great dogs these are. Parker had surgery for a pheochromocytoma that had invaded his vena cava and left a thrombus in a vessel by his liver. Aside from his tiredness and allergies and then developing a cough from the pressure against his lungs, he never complained but last Sunday couldn’t pee. Emergency exams revealed the tumor far gone. One wonders how his regular vet couldn’t have guessed until it was too late as well. Anyway, the MedVet facility in Worthington, OH, is worth it’s weight in gold for their professionalism and expertise. I can’t say enough about his emergency treatment there. His surgeon was reassuring that dogs do sometimes pull through but the postop shock was too much for our old boy. We miss him, and thanx for allowing me to bend your ear as I know you love this “rare” (not so much anymore) breed too. Susan Lange

Allis /Flint Pups

Bruce Barnett sent a photo of his pups from Allis Chalmers (she is a littermate to Tie). The sire of his pups is Galla Creek Flint. Flint is from Spud and Lia. Allis had 5 pups--only one female which is spoken for--we're getting her! He has 4 males and part of them are for sale. If you are interested. Bruce lives in Alabama--call us and we will give you his number.

Bruce called today. He has a litter of 6 pups from Bonnie Sue Parker and Flint. He has 4 males and 2 females. Some of these will be for sale too! He said they were are black with white and tan trim.

Success Story

When Lee Moore (on the right) got Sadie Belle, I don't think he had trained a squirrel dog. But Sadie is showing Lee what fun squirrel hunting really can be. Here are some pictures he has shared recently. Sadie is the mother of of Sassafras. The white Feist is Scout out of Babe and Radio Flyer. Lee said he is kicking in. I hope when Lee is an old man he will remember the Feists he owned that came from Galla Creek!

Happy Thanksgiving all. I am thankful for all my squirrel hunting friends, old and new. Betty cooked an entire turkey for my dogs so they could have a feast today. We love our Feists and are thankful for each of them that we now own and those that we have raised and sent to new squirrel hunting home. Raising Galla Feists Squirrel dogs is not our hobby--it is our mission in life!

Here is Lee's email:
Hello Renfroe's I hope yall are doing well and the dogs to. We are having a great squirrel dog season down here already this year even this early. In the pics one has 20 squirrels in it and Jimmy's dog did most of that and in the other one Me, Daddy , and my Sister and Sadie and Scout treed those 10 here behind the house. Sadie is still doing well and Scout is treeing but his hunting comes and goes in spurts, one time he will go to the woods good and the next he may want to stay with Me but he can really timber one and has done that more than treeing one off of the ground which to me is harder for a young dog to do. Scout will also retrieve the squirrel to me if he gets it when it falls out which I really like and he just picked that up on his own. Ruby my Buckley feist is getting interested but still has a good ways to go but she is young. I carried Sadie's pup Little Ann out with her this evening and she followed her all over the woods and we were impressed and think she is going to pick it up really fast. Take care and I will keep in touch. Lee.

Galla Creek Jama 'Bama

This is my pup out of Allis Chalmers and Flint. Allis is out of Dobs and Shooter. Flint is from Spud and Lia. I am going to call her Jama Bama. Bruce Barnett owns Allis and Flint. The litter of pups had 4 males and this one lone female--I am proud to get this little girl. If all things work out in about 2 years she will be a perfect match for Tie.

Bruce will have a pup or two for sale, I think. I will post a photo of them later. They are all black (or brindle) and white. They are about a week old. No females for sale, only males. Contact me and I will give you Bruce's phone number in AL.

Galla Is Flooded

This is what happened to the car that did not go over the Mountain...they went in the Creek.
It rained and rained. My road was flooded and I had to go in the opposite direction to get to Russellville. It was down enough tonight that I could cross. Notice how close it was to the electric high line.

Hagar

This is a Dobs / Shooter litter from the past. One of those white pups is our Tie! The spotted male is Case. The cream male is McCormick. The white female is Allis Chalmers! The little black male is Moline--buried here on Galla Creek. McCormick is gone, too! But all made squirrel dogs! We are excited to own Dobs again!
The Rutland family want another Feist. There is nothing like a Galla Feist. Looks like Hagar likes her new home. We are going to try and get them a male out of Dobs and Shooter! Will be a great cross with Hagar! She is out of Tie and Patch--Patch out Bonnie Sue. I plan to name their male, Ishmael and they can call him Ish!

Zipper in Wyoming

This is Galla Feist Zipper treeing in Wyoming! She loved her trip out west with Troy! I think this is our first Feist to tree in that state. Here is Troy's email!

WE CARRIED ZIPPER TO WYOMING THIS YEAR AND SHE HAD A TIME. SHE WAS EITHER TREEING SQUIRRELS OR RUNNING THE CHIPMUNKS IN THE ROCKS.

SHE DIDNT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE ALTITUDE LIKE POP AND I DID. THE CABIN SETS AT 7200 FT ON LARAMIE PEAK, THE ONLY THING THAT BOTHERED HER WAS THE HIGH WINDS THAT THEY HAVE THERE. IT CAN REALLY MAKE THE PINES SING A SONG AND RATTLES THE ROOF ON THE CABIN. NOW LARRY CAN SAY HE HAS HAD ONE OF HIS PUPS TREE IN WYOMING.

Heath Thomas' Zoey!

Heath Thomas sent this photo of Zoey's first squirrel this year. She is zooming! Heath is naming his new male, Zeke. We called Zeke, Cain. Heath had a put out of Lia and Ole Dan (Zack). Zack was hit by a car. It is always hard for us to report the demise of one of our Feists, but this happens and we hope Heath's new pup Zeke will be a good mate for Zoey. Here is Heath's email about Zoey. Zoey is a full sister to Tie, but not from the same litter. Tie is 2 years older than Zoey!
Here is Zoey with her first squirrel. She is treeing up a storm. We named the puppy Zeke. He is really pretty. Zoey is ready now so you had better squirrels look out. Heath

Mighty Trees

Galla Creek Kennel would like to say thank to every man or woman who has served our country in the military. We appreciate your service to all of us! You are our MIGHTY human Oaks!
At the front of my house stands this mighty Oak. It makes me feel small and young. Near my back door there is a huge Black Gum Tree that turns brilliant red in the fall while the Oak glows with gold. Nothing is a awesome as a mighty tree. Found this poem honoring them.
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day, 5
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain. 10
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
Joyce Kilmer 1886-1918

Another Proud Deer Slayer

Laine Hilliard (owner of Galla Feist Jag) took an 8 point in the deer woods. He hunts on a farm which is operated by Betty's nephew, Tony. Tony is the one with white hair! Here is Shannon's email:
Laine got a big 8pt today. He would have shot a doe but this big guy got in the way. Tony turned down steaks and tenderloin when I offered it to him but when I mentioned breakfast sausage, his eyes perked up.

Eli--Galla Feist in Connecticut

Al Larson of Connecticut sent a photo of Eli on the tailgate after a hunt this season. He is out of Larry Ellingson's Sandy and O' Max!
Here is Al's email! Thanks, Al for continuing to let us see and hear about Eli! We are sad when we send one of our Feists to a new home and never hear what happened to them. That is the case with Eli's sister (Red Fern). We sold her to an older gentleman from OK. She was already starting to tree around the house....but to this day we have not heard how she turned out! We love knowing about our Galla Feists. Please keep us posted!
Hi Larry and Betty,thought I would send a pic of Eli(2Rivers Sandy X Max) and a couple squirrels we got this morning.He will be 3 in January and I have enjoyed learning how to hunt squirrels with him.We don't have a lot of acorns this fall in CT but right now there seem to be plenty of squirrels,we'll have to see how the season progresses.One thing for sure,Me and Eli will be out there!Take care-Al Larson
