Sadie Belle

Lee Moore sent several shots of Sadie--out of Opal and Spud. Lee lives in Pheonix, MS and is looking forward to the coming squirrel season. Out of the 4 pups in this litter Sadie and Babe are the only two remaining. We lost Olive last winter and Caster Oyl was hit by a car. Thanks, Lee for sending the pictures.

Worth the Wait

We got the nicest email from South Carolina about a puppy from Belle from long ago. Belle will be 13 in a few days and I think she was 6 when she had her last litter of pups. Here is the email and the picture of the pup going to Carolina. They are going to call her Bonnie Belle. Bonnie goes back to Belle in the pedigree like this Randi to Lily to Pris to Belle! We still have the other little female from Randi for sale!
Copy of the nice email--Many years ago I had the opportunity to get one of Belle’s pups, even sent a deposit but it didn’t happen. My two sons were sharing an apartment and the building caught on fire and we had to help them, so we missed our opportunity. I praise the Lord that they were ok and that we were able to help them but all these years later I sure wish I could have gotten that pup. Anyway, that’s why I’m writing now. I would still like to get a pup that shares Belle’s pedigree. I live in South Carolina but would be willing to drive to Arkansas if need be. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Poor Man Has Poor Ways

My daughter and son-in-law got a brand new back door. I got the old one. It was just a door and did not have the jam. I wanted to put it on the garage to replace this old nasty one which was up. The old door would not even shut correctly. A new door with a glass is pretty expensive so yesterday, I built a jam and fit the door into the opening. The new door is wider than the old one so the old jam had to be torn out. It really turned out nice. It shuts like a dream. I built the outer trim out of two by fours. I am up town now.

Feist Dogs Have Grit!!

Ever wonder how long Feist dogs have been around? Abe Lincoln wrote this poem in 1845...about a Fice! George Washington spoke of them in his Journal in 1777. And down in Mississippi when William Faulkner sat writing those famous tales, a little Fyce dog sat by his feet! Here is Honest Abe's poem about a bear hunt and a gritty Feist (Fice) dog!

THE BEAR HUNT
A wild bear chase didst never see?
Then hast thou lived in vain.
Thy richest lump of glorious glee
When first my father settled here,
'Twas then the frontier line;
The panther's scream, filled night with fear
And bears preyed on the swine.
But wo for Bruin's short lived fun,
When rose the squealing cry;
Now man and horse, with dog and gun,
For vengeance, at him fly.
A sound of danger strikes his ear;
He gives the breeze a snuff;
Away he bounds, with little fear,
And seeks the tangled rough.
On press his foes, and reach the ground,
Where's left his half munched meal;
The dogs, in circles, scent around,
And find his fresh made trail.
With instant cry, away they dash,
And men as fast pursue;
O'er logs they leap, through water splash,
And shout the brisk halloo.
Now to elude the eager pack,
Bear shuns the open ground;
Through matted vines, he shapes his track
And runs it, round and round.
The tall fleet cur, with deep-mouthed voice,
Now speeds him, as the wind;
While half-grown pup, and short-legged fice,
Are yelping far behind.
And fresh recruits are dropping in
To join the merry corps:
With yelp and yelp--a mingled din--
The woods are in a roar.
And round, and round the chase now goes,
The world's alive with fun;
Nick Carter's horse, his rider throws,
And Mose' Hill drops his gun.
Now sorely pressed, bear glances back,
And lolls his tired tongue;
When is, to force him from his track,
An ambush on him sprung.
Across the glade he sweeps for flight,
And fully is in view.
The dogs, new-fired, by the sight,
Their cry, and speed, renew.
The foremost ones, now reach his rear,
He turns, they dash away;
And circling now, the wrathful bear,
They have him full at bay.
At top of speed, the horsemen come,
All screaming in a row.
"Whoop! Take him Tiger--Seize him Drum"--
Bang--bang--the rifles go.
And furious now, the dogs he tears,
And crushes in his ire.
Wheels left and right, and upward rears,
With eyes of burning fire.
But leaden death is at his heart,
Vain all the strength he plies,
And, spouting blood from every part,
He reels, and sinks and dies.
And now a dinsome clamor rose,
'Bout who should have his skin.
Who first draws blood, each hunter knows,
This prize must always win.
But who did this, and how to trace
What's true from what's a lie,
Like lawyers, in a murder case
They stoutly argufy.
Aforesaid fice, of blustering mood,
Behind, and quite forgot,
Just now emerging from the wood,
Arrives upon the spot.
With grinning teeth, and up-turned hair--
Brim full of spunk and wrath,
He growls, and seizes on dead bear,
And shakes for life and death.
And swells as if his skin would tear,
And growls, and shakes again;
And swears, as plain as dog can swear,
That he has won the skin.
Conceited whelp! we laugh at thee--
Now mind, that not a few
Of pompous, two-legged dogs there be,
Conceited quite as you.

Feist from 1950

Feist dogs have been around a long time. George Washington spoke of them in his journal and Abe Lincoln wrote a poem about a Feist dog and a bear hunt. This little Bench Legged Feist was shown with his master in National Geographic in the 1950s.

Mister Wilkes' Pups

We got an email from the Calvert's in Alabama and new pictures of the Mister pups. They still have one available--here's their email. Email us if you want the contact information!

We named this litter of pups after country singers.

In the first picture Martina is ready to leave for Mississippi.

The second picture shows a happy little boy taking Hank Junior to North Alabama.

The third picture shows Toby ("double trouble") on the left and Tim on the right. These two are going to Tennessee.

Of the litter there is one male and one female available. We are keeping either Taylor or Carrie.

Danny and Sarah Calvert in Alabama

The pictures are not in the order that they are spoken of in the email, but I think you can figure out which ones are which. They surely are nice Feist pups!

Hossy

Robert Wiggins sent a picture of a pup out of Fork (from Galla Creek). The pup's name is Hossy. Here you can see that squirrel laying in the fork of the tree and Hossy is after it. Robert said he was working in Florida. He always takes Fork with him. Robert builds new Home Depos and other stores and travels the south doing it. He got Fork because he usually stays in a camper near the site and Fork is good company.

Rosco is from Spook and G. W. Carver and Randi is out of Spud and Lily. Lily is out of Pris and Max. and Pris is from Bell and Wilkerson's Snowball. The famous Snowball dog owned by Earl Wilkerson. Our pups are $350 if anyone is interested in June or July. All these ancestors of June and July are awesome!

Another Ride of My Past

I traded for this car in the 1990s and kept it under a shed for about 10 years. I always wanted to put it back to original inside but never had the money to do. I sold it to a man who restored it and brought it back for me to see in 2005. This is one of my favorite vehicle brands--Studebaker!

I am leaning toward Winston, but don't know which other two would be the best.

Babe E. Oyl ~ Radio pups

I have not said anything on here about losing Olive Oyl. It is too hard to talk about, but she is gone. Passed away last winter. Wayne Hawkins in GA said he would have a litter of pups with
her sister and Radio for me. What a friend! Well, here they are one little girl and 3 males. Wayne may want to keep a male and I am keeping the female. Babe is out of Opal and Spud. Radio is a direct son of Dusty and Sally, full brother to Otis and Dummy.

I am naming this litter after cigarettes. I smoked for almost 50 years but have been off them for over 5 years. If I knew, I only had 6 months to live, first thing I would do is go buy a pack and sit and smoke them all. You will not understand unless you have been a smoker, but if you are or have been you will know the feeling.

I am naming two of the males Winston and Lucky Strike. Another may be Viceroy. I need a name for the little female. Help, help! Give me some ideas!

The Watermelon Man

I know an ol' watermelon man
who grows watermelons big and grand!
He guards his garden with ole shot gun,
Bunch of Feist dogs that'll bite and run.
He stings tin cans around the patch
If he hears noise, he lifts the latch
And sticks that shot gun through a crack
I hear 'Sic em' but don't look back.
Cause I am running down the road fast as I can
Trying to escape the ol' Watermelon man
Clutching a Charleston tight in my hands
'Cause I'd even die for watermelon, man!

You know our old hunt'n buddy Sterling is an accomplished Crappie Fisherman, Squirrel Hunter, Turkey Hunter, etc.....now we can add Watermelon Grower to that list. The first pictures were taken a couple weeks ago and show some nice Charleston Grays he had growing in his garden. I've had my eye on those two in the picture while they still on the vine, but was waiting for a good clear night to go shopping for them :-)Well he picked them today and called me to come over after work and pick one up, but as usual I was late and got there after the help had helped themselves, but there was still some nice ones left. Randi ~ Rosco Girls

Randi when she lived on Galla Creek!
This is the litter from Randi and Rosco (Matt Howell). We have purchased two of the females from the litter and are offering them for sale. They were born July 31 and will be ready toward the 3rd week of September. We hope Matt will name our girls June and July! Rosco is out of Spook and G. W. Carver and Randi is from a daughter of Pris Wilkerson and Max whose sire was Spud. You will notice the pups all look very similar. That is because it is a line breeding. Matt has made the cross before and some of those pups are treeing. Let us know if you are interested in June or July! We did not want to name one of our girls April because that is Matt's wife's name!

News about Piper

Got an update from Pete R. over in Tennessee about Piper and his Olive Oyl/Max pup. We sure hope his daughter, Julie will send us a picture. Piper if Jack's sister and the male pup is a brother to Preacher (Vance's pup). Pete is a beeman--as in honey! Also works at a Children's Hospital--maybe Vanderbilt--but you know how my memory has sometimers!
Any how here is part of Pete's email and his email address if Matt, Roger, or Sterling will get in touch with him!
I just love the two feist pups I received from you from your fall 2009 litters.(shooter x spook,Jacks sister)(Max x Olive Oyl).Both pups are doing well ,but need some much needed polish.Once the season starts,and it cools off about 80 degrees HA HA!! ,I plan to hunt around the house every day.I would like to hook up with some more seasoned feist addicts and compare notes and pick up training tips.I have trained many labs and bird dogs,but the little feist dogs are new to me and I want to make sure my time spent in the woods will help me finish these two little "fire balls" out without any negative glitches.I live in the Land Between the Lakes area of northwest TN and work in Nashville.My thoughts are to connect with Sterling Earhart,Roger LIttlejohn,but would also like to e-mail Matt Howell.I would be most grateful if you could share these addresses with me.I really regret that you guys live so far away.My pups are new to people in this area and many of my friends and neighbors are following their progress from a distance.I know the potential is there for both dogs to be great with the right instruction.Keep up the BLOG,I follow it daily,maybe with luck I can figure out how to send a few pictures on this crazy thing. Best wishes to you and your family,Pete Reimold (beeman)

Eli's Close Call

Got a holler from Al Larson up in Connecticut with an update on Eli. Eli came from Larry Elllingson's and is related to his new pups a few day's post previous. Al says it is hot even up north. We are glad the tree limb missed Eli and glad to see a photo of him again. The picture on the tree was taken in June. Here is a copy of Al's note to us!
Thought I would share a picture of a tree limb that fell in my backyard on Thursday.A heavy rainfall came through and this Cherry tree limb fell right over Eli's kennel with him in it.We are very lucky there was no damage to anything and of course Eli.It has been a hot humid summer here in CT and I haven't had Eli in the woods much,the treeing picture was back in June.Can't wait for the September 1 opener!Take care-Al Larson
