Dolly The Cajun

Dolly's blue eye really shows up in the top picture.  Tomorrow our Razorbacks play LA Ragin' Cajuns!  So Dolly may still be in Arkansas at game time.  Will she call the hogs or root for the Cajun?  By nightfall she will be in LA but we think she will always be a Arkansas Hog fan!

Too Hot

It was 98 degrees here today and Sissy looked for a cool place to sleep.  The concrete porch was the best she could  locate.

Once In A Blue Moon.....

This week we had a blue moon!  That is when there is 2 full moons in a 30 day period!  Blue moons don't happen often.  Each calendar year contains roughly 11 days more than the number of days in 12 lunar cycles. The extra days accumulate, so every two or three years (7 times in the 19-year Metonic cycle), there is an extra full moon. The extra moon necessarily falls in one of the four seasons, giving that season four full moons instead of the usual three, and, hence, a blue moon.

Piper's Progress

Below is an update on Piper (Feona) from Dan Alee!  She is doing great!  Read about her progress!
Hey, Piper is doing great. Very playful, very good appetite and rambunctious when up and around.

I told you she had picked up "here" very good and when you holler it she comes a running full blast even if she's laying in the living room sleeping. She is naturally setting when she gets to me so I believe when we start on "sit" she's going to grasp it quickly.

Well here is one I didn't expect this fast. Anytime we have a dog in the house I always hang a bell on the door and over time teach them to ring it when they want to go outside. Most of my past Labs pick it up in a couple weeks reliably.

Whenever I take Piper outside I always ring the bell and say "outside."

After two days of this and after getting up this morning and taking her out we came back in to start breakfast.

Well she rang the bell on her own and I thought it was a fluke but anytime that bell rings, the dog goes out no matter what so they pick up on it. Out I set her.

After coming back in and eating her meal this morning, about 5 minutes later she rang the bell again. I opened the door and she went right out and done her business.

She has rang the bell two more times since then this morning and each time I opened the door she went out on her own.

Now I know she isn't potty trained yet and that will take a number of months but after just two days of the bell, she seems like she's got it figured out already. That's pretty impressive and she really does seem like she's going to be a very smart girl.

May seem like we do a lot with her but in reality 99% of the time she spends just being a pup.

Labs are usually very smart and rank real high on the dog aptitude scale. Never researched Feist but I am betting she is going to finish off pretty reliable obedience by the age of 16 weeks or so like most of the Labs I've trained.

If you haven't figured it out, I've always loved obedience training, lol.

Special Family ~ / ~ Special Feist

The Allee family came Saturday and took Feona to a new home.  They are naming her Galla Creek Texas Piper!  Dan and his wife, daughter and grandson are a first class family.  Piper was a little pooped from the transition to a new home, but came to life after a couple days.  Dan said--"she jumped around like a dog on crack!"  Piper was probably happy to be away from 6 brothers.  She stayed in the kennel most of the time here.  Piper was only half as big as most of the litter and was really about 1/4 the size of 3 of the males.  Siggie is glad she has a great home!  The Allee's went home with one of our yellow meated watermelons!

Rutland's Hagar

Marc sent this picture of Hagar.  We love to hear from Marc because we can tell how he loves our little girl, Hagar. She was the runt and we did not dock her tail because we were afraid she would not make it. She is big now and that tail whips around when she trees.  She had a sister we call Ellie and Ellie's owner came tonight and bought a male Feist, E. Z. from our litter from Dobs and Spud.  E. Z. is black with white trim and he was the largest of the males of the litter.  We love to hear about our dogs and what they are doing.  Ellie's owner (Steve Granberry) said he just took Ellie for walks and she started treeing.  Given the opportunity--that is what our Feists need to be squirrel dogs--the opportunity in the woods!
Here is Marc's email:
I know it has been a while since I touched base but here is Hagar on her first warm up hunt this year. She treed this one in about five minutes. Btw I have truly been blessed with such an awesome dog. Best I have ever had.  Marc Rutland
E. Z. is asleep in the right corner of the basket!

Gretchen

A nice family with two young boys came today and took Grit home with them.  She is the first to leave and more will be going to their homes soon.  Taking care of nine pups is a full time job, but we are committed to giving the best care to Feists.

Dobs / Spud Pups Weaned

Dobs is crying tonight.  We took her from the puppies.  We had to put 4 in one kennel and 5 in another as 9 pups in one kennel is too many.  Sigrid came over this evening and played with Feona, Dolly, and Barrister.  She took these photos.  When I uploaded the pictures, the card said 273 photos so Sigrid was busy snapping!

Feona, Gretchen and Dahlia

Out of the nine pups of Dobs and Spud, there are only three girls--Dolly (Dahlia), Gretchen, and Feona!  Dolly is going to live with Catfish and Feona is going to live with the Allee family.
 Dolly
Feona--her spots are chocolate colored and not black as we thought!
Gretchen--she does not have as much tan as Dolly!

 Dolly has one blue eye!

New Chickens

Pups will be ready to go to their homes this weekend.  We have been getting some new chickens so we can enjoy a good breakfast when cool weather gets here!
Tonight we went to Knoxville, AR and came home with 4 Black Star hens.  They are a cross between a Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock.  They are sex linked chickens like the Cherry Eggers we bought last week.  So we have 9 new big good laying chickens.  We are going to try to get about a dozen new Banties before winter.  We have 10 Welsummer hens but they are not very good layers.

One of the Cherry Egger pullets is laying and the eggs are a deep brown and medium sized like we prefer.  The Black Star lays a light brown egg.

Galla Creek Archer

This is Archer and he will be moving to near Clarksville, AR with Coach Miller!  Archer is laid back like Spud.  He is calm, cool, and collected!
